Resolution on the current situation in University of North Bengal following CBI raid.
The Executive Committee of the North Bengal University Alumni Association ( NBUAA ) in its meeting dated 28/08/2022 appraised and considered the over-all situation in the University Campus following the raid by the CBI on 24/08/2022. The Agency raided both the official residence and Office of the Vice-Chancellor, the Chief Executive of the University.
The Executive Committee is utterly disturbed, dismayed and anguished that for the first time in the history of NBU covering more than six decades, this type of a raid by CBI, a Central investigation Agency on criminal conspiracies, took place involving the highest functionary.
It has been reported in the media that the raid was mainly conducted on issues of corruption in the School Service Commission (SSC) pertaining to appointments in teaching and non-teaching posts in schools against cash bribes and fraudulent activities in SSC during tenure of the present Vice-Chancellor as Chairman of the SSC. It is not very clear whether irregularities in NBU are also under radar of the CBI team. Subsequently, the Vice-Chancellor is being interrogated by the CBI at Kolkata since 25/08/2022. The University, as of now, is without an acting / officiating Vice-Chancellor or at least a Campus In-charge causing huge disruption, confusion and chaos in academic and administrative matters, both short and long terms. The entire community of students, scholars, parents and all stake holders are aggrieved as well as panicked about the future.
The NBUAA is of the considered opinion that the incident is most unfortunate. It is a terrible slur on our beloved institution and its hard-earned image of being a role-model in higher education and research in North Bengal and beyond. As already mentioned, such type of external raid and investigation within the Office of the Chief Executive is unprecedented in this University. It is hardly necessary to state that the high prestige and respect of NBU in public mind have been severely dented upon by this incident and its aftermath.
The NBUAA urges upon the competent authorities to complete the investigations whatsoever as early as possible and allow the NBU to return to normalcy and resume its statutory activities in full swing. We also urge the State Govt. to pay concerted attention and utmost priority towards NBU and initiate prompt measures so that the traditional ambience of academic pursuit, culture and governance are restored at the earliest.
